Fireplaces and Heating Direct offer a chimney sweeping service as a stand-alone service for homes within Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
Of course a chimney sweep is included in many of our other services. When we come out to instal or service your appliance we will sweep your chimney as a matter of course, but sometimes you just need a chimney swept, so we are more than happy to come out to offer the sweep as a stand-alone service for homes within Herts Beds and Bucks.
Chimneys for all heating systems need to be maintained. whether you are venting coal, oil, gas, wood and multifuel systems.
During the normal operation of your fire, a layer of creosote builds up on the inside of the chimney, restricting the flow of gases away from the fire. The chimney must be swept to remove the soot as it is not only important to make sure that carbon monoxide (CO) is vented out but also the soot can catch fire, setting the chimney and possibly the whole building alight.
You can keep the level of soot down by burning the right fuel and keeping your appliance serviced but whatever you burn you should get your chimney swept annually.
At certain times of year, birds will also nest down your chimney. You can stop this happening by using a cowl to stop them getting access to the chimney, but if you don't have one, you may find that your chimney quickly becomes home for a variety of birds, who will often fill up your chimney with sticks, straw and other nest-building material.
All of which is extremely combustable.
Any time after a prolonged period of not using the fire it is wise to sweep. Usually this is done in the autumn, but any time in the summer is good - it is usually a slightly quieter time for sweeps anywhere so it is best to do it then and not duing the busy "heating season" when you could be waiting several weeks to be able to use your fire safely.
